About Talon
Talon Professional Services has spent over 25 years helping organizations build exceptional technology teams. Headquartered in the U.S. and focused on the North American market, Talon specializes in contract, direct hire, and project-based placements across creative, technical, and digital talent. Their client base skews heavily toward the BFSI space, where the technical bar is high and the margin for error is low. Ten consecutive Best of Staffing Awards for both client and talent satisfaction.
The Challenge: Fraud Was Getting Through
Talon's recruiting team was already doing the hard work right. Behavioral interviews, thorough resume reviews, education verification, multi-stage candidate conversations. The process was rigorous and the team was experienced. But as AI tools became more accessible to candidates, even a strong human-led process had a blind spot.
"Candidates walk us through their background and their past projects, and it can sound amazing," says Gillian Unger, Director of Recruiting at Talon. "But when it came to a technical interview with our client, we'd sometimes get feedback that maybe they weren't as technical as they claimed, or they couldn't code in a language they said they could."
The problem got worse as AI tools became more accessible. By mid-2025, Talon was getting feedback from some long-standing financial services clients: candidates were using AI on interviews. Recruiters tried warning candidates directly, hoping to deter them. It didn't work.
"We kept hearing it from the same teams," says Unger. "We think they're using AI. We can tell they're pausing and then giving the world's best answer."
The team needed a way to catch it earlier, not because their process was broken, but because the threat had outpaced what any human screening process could handle alone.
"Reliance on human beings is wonderful in its ideal state," says Kelly. "But doing that well and effectively is very difficult when you're trying to figure out if someone really has the skills they claim to have."
The Solution: Verify Skills Before They Reach the Client
Talon didn't need to rebuild their recruiting process. They needed to extend it. Ropes gave their already-strong team a way to put candidates in a real-world environment and verify what behavioral screening couldn't: whether the skills were actually there.
"We have an amazing team that is able to vet candidates and present them to our clients," says Unger. "But what Ropes did was take it to the next level and make good recruiters great recruiters."
The pitch process evolved quickly. Rather than describing the tool to clients, Talon shows it to them. They pull up a job description, run it through Ropes, and let the hiring manager react to the auto-generated assessment.
"I find the most joy when I say to a hiring manager, 'Go through this problem. Tell me what changes you want made,'" says Unger. "And they come back and say, 'I don't want any changes. That's perfect. It hits the nail right on the head.'"
That moment closes the conversation. Many of Talon's clients now refuse to consider candidates who haven't already completed a Ropes assessment.
For clients who want to understand what goes into vetting a candidate before they ever see a resume, Talon walks them through the full picture which includes identity checks, skill validation, and more
"It's eye-opening," says Unger. "And that saves them tons of hours of interviewing."
The Moment They Knew It Worked
After implementing Ropes in August 2025, the feedback loop from that 10+ year financial services client changed. The recurring complaints about AI use in interviews stopped completely.
"I have never heard from a hiring manager since we implemented Ropes that they think a candidate might be using AI," says Unger. "Candidates are still using it. We're just catching it early in the process, and they don't make it to our hiring manager's desk."
That shift, from reactive to proactive, changed how Talon's team operates.
Results: 75% Interview-to-Hire. 50+ Hours Saved. Placements Doubled.
The numbers from Talon's first year with Ropes are significant.
On a single Q2 project with a global insurance firm, Talon achieved a 75% interview-to-hire ratio and saved the client over 50 hours of interview time. In the staffing industry, that kind of ratio is nearly unheard of.
Across the broader business, both send-to-interview and interview-to-placement rates doubled. Clients are spending less time reviewing candidates because the candidates showing up are already validated.
"Ropes allows us to actually test skills in a real-life environment," says Unger. "It simulates what they would be doing on the job and gives us a glimpse into what they're actually capable of, and whether that matches up with the project and client we're looking to place them at."
Working With the Ropes Team
Joe Kelly has been in staffing for 20 years. He's worked with a lot of vendors. The experience with Ropes has stood out for a specific reason.
"When we come to you with challenges or feature requests, you say, 'Yeah, that makes sense,' and then you make it happen," says Kelly. "With almost every other vendor, they try to explain why you're wrong. With Ropes, it's been the opposite."
Feature requests raised by Talon have been shipped within 2 days. For a firm that operates in fast-moving, high-stakes placements, that kind of responsiveness matters.
"It's been a mutually rewarding relationship," says Kelly. "And it's so refreshing."
Looking Ahead
Talon is not slowing down. With Ropes embedded in their process and clients increasingly expecting it, the firm is focused on continuing to raise the bar on quality.
"Companies that aren't utilizing a product like Ropes are going to get left behind," says Kelly. "I don't know that there are any other companies at the level where Ropes is right now."
For Talon, it came down to a simple shift: good recruiters became great ones.
